Image

Phase II of the Lake Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project includes enhancements along Olive and Maryland avenues from Third Street to Second Street, including the triangular grass island in the middle of the two roads and Second Street from Olive Avenue to Rehoboth Avenue. One of the main objectives of the project is to provide safe, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant sidewalks and crosswalks. The project includes a minor realignment of the streets and intersections in order to more safely control traffic movements and shorten pedestrian crossings. Other improvements include constructing a new stormwater management facility within the center island, upgrading the existing drainage system, and installing crosswalks at all intersections. A Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant funded approximately 80% of the project ($800,000).The city’s portion of the project was approximately $400,000. Construction for the Lake Avenue Streetscape Phase II Improvements Project began in fall 2020 and was completed in about mid-year 2021.

The first phase of construction was completed in May 2017 and resulted in a wide array of street improvements on Lake Avenue from Rehoboth Avenue to Third Street. The project included a minor realignment of the street, elimination of parking on one side, installation of American with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant crosswalks and sidewalks for the full length of the street on both sides, and improved lighting. Additionally, utility poles were relocated, and the existing drainage system was upgraded.
