Public Notice of Annual Municipal Election

PUBLIC NOTICE OF ANNUAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2020, FROM 10:00 A.M. TO 6:00 P.M. EASTERN DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME IN THE CITY OF REHOBOTH BEACH CONVENTION CENTER LOCATED AT 229 REHOBOTH AVENUE, REHOBOTH BEACH, DE  19971

NOTICE is hereby given to all qualified electors of the City of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, that the Annual Municipal Election will be held in said City on Saturday, August 8, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. eastern daylight savings time, in the City of Rehoboth Beach Convention Center located at 229 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

There are four (4) Candidates running for Commissioner in the August 8, 2020 Election.  The Candidates are:  Hugh C. Fuller, Patrick J. Gossett, Jay D. Lagree and Rachel Macha.  At said Annual Municipal Election, two (2) Commissioners shall be elected.  The term of office for the two (2) persons receiving the highest number of votes for Commissioner, shall be for a term of three (3) years.

There are two (2) Candidates running for Commissioner with the title of Mayor.  The Candidates are:  Paul G. Kuhns and Stanley A. Mills, Jr.  At said Annual Election, one (1) Commissioner with the title of Mayor shall be elected.  The term of office for that person, shall be for a term of three (3) years.

At said Annual Municipal Election, every person, male or female, who shall have attained the age of eighteen (18) years on the date of the Election, and who is a freeholder, leaseholder, in the City of Rehoboth Beach, or if the property is in a TRUST and the proper paperwork is on file with the City, whether or not a resident of the State of Delaware or of the City of Rehoboth Beach, and also every person male or female, who shall have attained the age of eighteen (18) years on the date of the election, and who shall be a bona fide resident of the State of Delaware, and the City of Rehoboth Beach, shall have one (1) vote, provided he or she has registered and is on the Books of Registered Voters of the City of Rehoboth Beach.

All votes shall be offered in person, or by absentee ballot.  Affidavits may be obtained from the City’s website (www.cityofrehoboth.com).  Per the City’s Charter, the written affidavit must be filed no later than 12:00 noon on August 7, 2020.  Due to the COVID-19, and City Hall is closed to the public, we are requesting that you file your affidavit prior to Tuesday, August 4, 2020.  After approval of the affidavit, an absentee ballot will be mailed to you.  The last day for the City to mail ballots is Tuesday, August 4, 2020.    Absentee Ballots must be received before the polls close on the day of the Election.  No voter shall vote for more candidates than there are offices to be filled at the election.  Voting machines will be used.  For the purpose of voting, a leaseholder shall be deemed to mean any person holding land under a valid lease either in his/her own name or who is the owner of an undivided interest in a leasehold with his/her spouse for an original term of not less than ten (10) years whose lease is recorded in the office of the Recorder of Deeds in and for Sussex County, and who is the owner of an improvement of at least One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Rehoboth Beach will be following the requirements set forth in Governor Carney’s State of Emergency declaration.

Voters are welcome to appear at the Convention Center to vote as they have in the past.  During the election the City will be implementing social distancing, enforce that all persons age 13 and older wear face-covering at all times, and to enforce limitations of persons at a time in the polling place.

The City is encouraging voters to vote by absentee ballot.
