The City of Rehoboth Beach Annual Municipal Election

CITY OF REHOBOTH BEACH MUNICIPAL ELECTION - SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2020

 Annual Municipal Elections for the City of Rehoboth Beach are held on the second Saturday in August from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. The annual election will be held in the Convention Center located at 229 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE.

At such annual election, every natural person, male or female, who shall have attained the age of Eighteen (18) years and who shall be a resident, freeholder or leaseholder, and who is registered on the Books of Registered Voters of The City of Rehoboth Beach shall have one (1) vote.  If you would like to review the City’s Charter, you may do so by going to the City’s website, www.cityofrehoboth.com

Due to the current pandemic, City Hall remains closed to the public until further notice. If you meet any of the above qualifications and wish to register to vote, please call City Hall at 302-227-6181 ext. 159 and speak to election staff officials Donna Moore or Jean Lee.

If you miss two (2) consecutive annual elections, your name will be placed on an inactive list.  You will be notified by postcard requesting your voting status.

The deadline for voter registration is the close of business on Thursday, July 9, 2020.

PLEASE RETURN THE ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUEST TO:  City of Rehoboth Beach, 229 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE  19971.  The form must be completed and signed to be processed.

Absentee Ballots will be sent to everyone who has an Absentee Ballot Request form on file. The deadline for the City to mail Ballots is the last Tuesday prior to the Election on August 4, 2020. Ballots MUST be received by mail or in person before the Polls close on the day of the Election.

Voter Registration

The voter registration deadline is the close of business on Thursday, July 9, 2020. 

Notice of Solicitation of Candidates 

The City of Rehoboth Beach will hold its Annual Municipal Election on Saturday, August 8, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Convention Center located in the Municipal Building at 229 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach. Two (2) seats for City Commissioner and one (1) seat for Mayor are available. The terms of office are three (3) years for each position. To be eligible to vote on August 8, you must register at City Hall on or before July 9, 2020.

Candidates for elective offices in the City of Rehoboth Beach shall be, by petition, signed by not less than ten (10) or more than twenty-five (25) qualified electors of the City and filed in the City Manager’s office on or before 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2020.

The Commissioners of Rehoboth Beach approved each candidate’s qualifications as prescribed by the City Charter at their regular meeting on June 19, 2020. Incumbent Mayor Paul Kuhns and Stan Mills are running for mayor. Two residents and two nonresidents are approved for two commissioner seats in the 2020 race. The two resident candidates are Jay Lagree and Rachel Macha. Hugh Fuller and Patrick Gossett are the two nonresident candidates.

Each Nominating Petition shall designate only one person to be voted for as a Commissioner of Rehoboth Beach or as Commissioner with the title of Mayor.

No qualified elector shall sign the Nominating Petition of more candidates than there are elective offices to be filled.  Each elector signing such petition shall also state whether he/she signed such petition as a freeholder, as a leaseholder, or as a resident.

Attached to each Nominating Petition, an affidavit must be included of the circulator thereof stating the following:  the number of signers; that each signature appended thereto was made in his/her presence; that each signature is the genuine signature of the person whose name it purports to be; and that all of said signers are entitled to vote at the Regular Municipal Election referred to.

Any qualified elector may request an absentee ballot to vote by filing a written Absentee Ballot Request no later than 12:00 p.m. the day before the election, Friday, August 7, 2020.  Certain requirements must be met to vote absentee.  For more information, please refer to the City Charter, available online at www.cityofrehoboth.com, or call 302-227-6181 ext. 159.

Absentee Ballots

Request for an absentee ballot form may be mailed to voters requesting them or by calling 302-227-6181 ext. 159 or voters may visit  PDF icon REQUEST FOR ABSENTEE BALLOT to download the form. The request form for an absentee ballot must be filed no later than noon on Friday, August 7, 2020.

Absentee ballots will be available on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. Ballots will be mailed to everyone who has a request for an absentee ballot form on file. The deadline for the City to mail ballots is August 4, 2020. Completed ballots must be received in person or by mail before the polls close on the day of the election.
