Philadelphia Street Water Main Replacement Project

Oct 17, 2019

The City of Rehoboth Beach will begin replacing the water main on Philadelphia Street between Scarborough Avenue to Bayard Avenue mid-October 2019. The project will be completed sometime by the end of November 2019. This project is being completed prior to the resurfacing of Philadelphia Street that will occur following the water main replacement. Access to driveways will always be maintained during construction, except when the water main is being placed across the width of the driveways and when the concrete sidewalk is being replaced. It is expected that closure of the driveways should not take more than half a day and once the crew completes the installation of the water main across the driveways, a temporary surface will be provided.

After the new water main has been installed and tested, the crew will have to connect the new water main to the existing water system at several locations. During this work, the water to Philadelphia Street will have to be shut off. Affected property owners will be given 24 hours’ notice prior to the water being temporarily shut off. We are anticipating that these planned shutdowns will take up to a half a day each at which time the water will be turned back on.

Once the water is restored, the crew will attempt to purge any air trapped in the service line. If some air is left in the line, you may notice a sputtering sound the first time you operate a fixture. This should only last a few seconds and will not cause any harm. The first few gallons of water may be discolored. You can remove the discoloration and any additional air trapped in your line by opening one or more faucets in the lowest part of your house and running cold water for 15 minutes. Do not open a hot water faucet until you have completed this flush or sediment may get trapped in your hot water heater. You should also remove and clean the aerator screens on all your faucets as particles can get trapped in the screen.

To assist the City in completely the water main replacement as efficiently as possible, the City is asking that you not park your vehicles on either side of the street between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. During construction, mail delivery and trash pick-up will not be interrupted.

The City of Rehoboth Beach wishes to apologize in advance for any inconvenience it may cause you and hopes to complete construction in a timely manner.
