POLICE INTERNSHIP OFFERS CAREER EXPERIENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT

In taking community connections one step further, the Rehoboth Beach Police Department is offering Cape Henlopen High School senior Ryan Smith the opportunity to get a taste of his future career through an internship with the organization. Smith, a senior from Milton, Delaware, is interning with the police this school year. The department has partnered with the Early Career Experience Program (ECEP) to give students a realistic look at the world of law enforcement. Smith spends time weekly working alongside officers and civilian staff in detention, dispatch, community services, records and more. “Not only do we want to expose kids to what we do in law enforcement, but we want to mentor them and share with them what our daily tasks are,” said Lt. Will Sullivan. Smith says it's a hands-on experience that is valuable to his understanding of the law enforcement field. He enjoys seeing the behind the scenes things and how it really works because you can’t learn that in the classroom. The ECEP is designed to provide students with authentic, real-world learning experiences in which they can explore their future. “The department is looking forward to providing Ryan with a rewarding experience. Our goal is to impart the basic knowledge of police duties and responsibilities to each of our interns so that they go on to have a successful and rewarding career in law enforcement,” said Sullivan.
