Rehoboth Beach Police take back 86 pounds of drugs during nationwide event

In just half a day on Saturday, April 28, the Rehoboth Beach Police Department collected 86 pounds of prescription drugs as part of Drug Take Back Day. “It’s a good indicator of how much surplus medication is out there,” said Chief Keith Banks. Officers send the medications to be incinerated, which is the method of disposal preferred by the Environmental Protection Agency. Saturday’s event was part of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency. Law enforcement agencies throughout the country participate in the biannual event. According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from a home medicine cabinet. Chief Keith Banks says by turning over unwanted or expired medication, it not only keeps the environment clean but also prevents pills from getting into the wrong hands.
