Antonio J. Alfaro, 35, of Georgetown, Del. was arrested for a third offense charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, a felony, after being stopped by Rehoboth Beach Police for committing a traffic violation.

On Monday (09/04/17) at around 8:30pm, Rehoboth Beach Police responded to Sixth Street for a report of a verbal domestic altercation.  Alfaro, one of the involved parties, was contacted by police and agreed to leave the residence.  Due to his level of intoxication, officers advised Alfaro not to operate a motor vehicle; however,  police transported Alfaro to an offsite location to meet a third party for a ride.

A short time later, a police officer observed Alfaro return to Sixth Street, enter a red Jeep Cherokee with Delaware registration and drive away without it’s headlights being illuminated.  The officer, who recognized Alfaro from the previous complaint, performed a traffic stop on the vehicle as it exited Rehoboth Avenue onto State Route 1.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer observed that Alfaro continued to show signs of intoxication. Standardized roadside field sobriety testing procedures were followed and Alfaro was eventually taken into custody and transported to the Beebe Healthcare for further analysis.

During the investigation, police learned that the red Jeep Cherokee Alfaro was operating was owned by another party involved in the original police complaint on Sixth Street.  Upon contacting the owner of the vehicle, police learned that Alfaro did not have permission to take the car.

Alfaro was arrested and charged with 1 count of felony third offense driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, 1 count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, 1 count of failure to have lights on when required, and 1 count of driving with an expired license.

Alfaro was released on $3,210.00 unsecured bail to a sober co-signer.

Release by PIO Lt. Jaime B. Riddle.
