John J. Castaldo, 51, of Salisbury, Md., was arrested Sunday after he used a steak knife to cut out and remove a section of the sign attached to the fence enclosing the new Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats building being constructed in the 300 block of Rehoboth Avenue.
On March 5th, 2017, just before 4pm, the Rehoboth Beach Police were called to Dogfish Head by a witness who observed Castaldo cut out a section of the sign and place it in a nearby SUV. The investigating officer was able to observe the sign, in plain view, through the rear window of the identified vehicle. The sign, consisting of a fabric or tarp like material, runs the length of the six foot fence separating pedestrians on the sidewalk from the construction site.
The investigation revealed that Castaldo, who obtained the steak knife from inside Dogfish Head, cut out a portion of the sign, placed it in the SUV and returned to the establishment. Officers located Castaldo, who had been drinking, outside Dogfish Head where he was taken into custody without incident.
Castaldo was arrested and charged with 1 count of theft under $1000.00 and 1 count of criminal mischief under $1000 property damage. Both charges were misdemeanors. Castaldo was realeased to a sober co-signer on $600.00 unsecured bail.
