REHOBOTH OFFICER RECEIVES AWARD FROM AMERICAN RED CROSS

On August 29, 2019, Seasonal Officer Cole Revel called on his training to save the life of a man who was choking. For this heroic and lifesaving action, Revel received the Red Cross Lifesaving Award for Extraordinary Personal Action in a ceremony at City Hall on January 23, 2020. The award was presented by Theresa Young, Greater Chesapeake Region Red Cross Executive Director. “We’re extremely proud of Cole for displaying the highest degree of concern of one human being for another who was in distress,” said Young. “His actions exemplify our mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.”

Last August 29, Revel and fellow officer Brian Reynolds responded to the area of Wilmington Avenue and the boardwalk for a subject choking. Upon arrival, they verified that a subject was choking. Revel performed two abdominal thrusts that successfully cleared the airway of an 18-year-old choking victim who refused additional care. “His quick response, recognition of the severity of the medical emergency, immediate actions and effective care resulted directly in saving the life of this individual,” said Cpl. Brian Reynolds who nominated Revel for the accolade.

There are three categories of Red Cross lifesaving awards. The Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders is the highest award given to an individual, or team of individuals, who saves or sustains life, outside of a medical setting, as part of their employment or while on duty and had an obligation to respond, using skills learned in a Red Cross Training Services course. The Certificate of Merit, given by the American Red Cross to an individual or team of individuals who saves or sustains life by using skills and knowledge learned in an American Red Cross Health and Safety course. And the Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action, for individuals and teams that are not Red Cross trained.
