STOLEN MOTOR VEHICLE INVESTIGATION LEADS TO MULTIPLE ARRESTS

Jack F. Kelleher, 17, of Rehoboth Beach, Del., John J. Baron, 17, of Lewes, Del., and Edward A. Launay, 23, of Rehoboth Beach, Del. were all arrested in connection to a theft of a 2006 Kawasaki KLX 250 motorcycle from Second Street in Rehoboth Beach.

On Thursday at around 9:45pm, officers took a report that a victim had his motorcycle stolen from Second Street in the area of Baltimore Avenue.  The case was immediately turned over to a detective for further investigation, which led to the recovery of surveillance footage of Kelleher and Baron stealing the motorcycle; however the detective was unaware of their identity at that time. 

As the department was preparing a press release in an attempt to identify the suspects, an officer was contacted by a friend of the victim who observed the stolen motorcycle in the bed of a white long bed pickup truck leaving Rehoboth Beach on Rehoboth Avenue Westbound.      

Officers immediately began a search of the State Route One corridor and were able to locate the white truck on State Route One Northbound approaching the Nassau Bridge.  Officers were able to stop the truck, which was operated by Launay.  Kelleher and Baron were passengers.  All three individuals were taken into custody and the truck was towed back to a secured facility until a search warrant was obtained.

During a search of the vehicle, the detective located personal use amounts of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the personal possessions of all three individuals arrested. 

Subsequent investigation revealed that Kelleher and Baron had also attempted to burglarize a residence in the 100 block of Scarborough Avenue earlier on Friday, prior to their being arrested.  Kelleher and Baron attempted to gain entry to the residence by cutting the screen of a bathroom window, but were unsuccessful.   

Kelleher was arrested and charged with 3 felonies; 1 count of attempted second degree burglary, 1 count of theft of a motor vehicle and 1 count of second degree conspiracy.  Additionally, Kelleher was charged with 3 misdemeanors; 1 count of possession of marijuana, 1 count of possession of drug paraphernalia, and 1 count of criminal mischief under $1000.00.

Kelleher was committed to the Stevenson House Detention Center in default of $7250.00 secured bail.

Baron was arrested and charged with 3 felonies; 1 count of attempted second degree burglary, 1 count of theft of a motor vehicle, and 1 count of second degree conspiracy.  Baron was also charged with 3 misdemeanors; 1 count of possession of marijuana, 1 count of possession of drug paraphernalia, and 1 count of criminal mischief under $1000.00.  In addition to his charges, Baron had two active capiases’ for violations of probation.

Baron was committed to the Stevenson House Detention Center in default of $8750.00 secured bail.

Launay was arrested and charged with 2 felonies; 1 count of theft of a motor vehicle and 1 count of second degree conspiracy.  Additionally, Launay was charged with 2 misdemeanors; 1 count of possession of marijuana and 1 count of possession of drug paraphernalia.   

Launay was released on $5000.00 unsecured bail.
