Anthony S. Boehmer, 26, of Camden Wyoming, Del. was charged with DUI, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest after striking a curb with his vehicle in the Rehoboth Avenue Traffic Circle in front of a Rehoboth Beach Police Officer.

On Saturday at around 12:59am a Rehoboth Beach Police Officer was following Boehmer who was driving a dark green Honda Civic in the right lane of Rehoboth Avenue westbound when he failed to properly negotiate the traffic circle.  Boehmer’s vehicle entered the northwest portion of the traffic circle striking the curb along the shoulder of the right lane. The impact re-directed the vehicle back across the roadway into the left lane of travel.  The officer immediately stopped the vehicle, which had sustained front passenger side damage eventually rendering it disabled.

Upon contacting Boehmer, the officer smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle and observed that Boehmer was showing indications of impairment.  While speaking to the driver, the officer also observed in plain sight in the center console of the vehicle a clear plastic bag containing marijuana and a glass pipe.  Boehmer was administered standard field sobriety test and a portable breath test on scene which he failed. After obtaining a search warrant for a sample of Boehmer’s blood for alcohol analysis, officers transported him to Beebe Health Center where the blood draw was performed. Boehmer, who refused to allow nurses to draw his blood, had to be restrained by officers.  Boehmer’s resistive behavior resulted in a handcuff key being broken off in the set of handcuffs being used to restrain him.  Officers were able to remove the handcuffs, but both the handcuffs and the key were permanently damaged.

Boehmer, pictured above, was arrested and charged with 1 count of driving under the influence of alcohol, 1 count of inattentive driving, 1 count of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, 1 count of possession of drug paraphernalia, 1 count of misdemeanor resisting arrest, 1 count of misdemeanor criminal mischief and 1 count of failure to have insurance identification in possession. Boehmer was arraigned at the Justice of the Peace Court 3, issued a $3050.00 unsecured bail and released.

Every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes according to MADD.org.  The Rehoboth Beach Police Department, while grateful no one was injured in this collision, strongly implores that if you are going to drink, please utilize a sober driver. In addition, we asked that if you are contacted by police, please follow the commands of officers and prevent the escalation of a situation.
