Student Receives 2019 Geoff and Ken Derrickson Memorial Scholarship

Sep 09, 2019

The Rehoboth Beach Police Department and the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company in partnership with the Geoff and Ken Derrickson Memorial Scholarship Foundation are pleased to announce the 2019 inaugural recipient, Claire Sullivan. Sullivan received the $5,000 scholarship on Friday, September 6, 2019, in Rehoboth Beach. The scholarship fund was established by Betsy Baumeister and Bob Derrickson to honor the lives of their sons, Ken and Geoff Derrickson, twin brothers who died at young ages. Baumeister and Derrickson never forgot the support and care from Rehoboth’s first responders for each of their sons. The scholarship is intended to defray the cost of postsecondary education for a member or family member of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company and the Rehoboth Beach Police Department. Sullivan, the daughter of Rehoboth Beach Police Department’s Lt. Will Sullivan, attends the University of Delaware. “Claire works tirelessly for others without any self-serving expectations, yet remains committed to her studies,” said Police Chief Keith Banks. “We are grateful to Betsy and Bob to recognize the accomplishments of Claire and help further her education through awarding her scholarship funds.” Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company member Kent Swarts said, “We are appreciative for having this wonderful tool as an incentive and award and are honored this is given in the memory of Geoff and Ken.”

To apply for the scholarship, a person must be a member or family member with either department. Also considered is an applicant who is or may become a member of either department. Recipients may annually reapply for the scholarship during any year they are eligible under these qualifications. An applicant must be accepted to an accredited university, college, educational program or technical school.
