REHOBOTH AVENUE CLOSED DUE TO EIGHT VEHICLE INJURY ACCIDENT

Jul 08, 2018

On Saturday (07/07/18) evening officers from the Rehoboth Beach Police Department responded to a personal injury accident that occurred in the second block of Rehoboth Avenue westbound resulting in the closure of that portion of roadway for over two hours.

Just after 6pm, a 45 year old Middletown, Del. man operating a blue Dodge pick-up truck attempted to back out of a parking space along the north shoulder of Rehoboth Avenue east of Second Street.  In the process of doing so his vehicle collided with another vehicle that was westbound on Rehoboth Avenue.  The operator attempted to flee the scene in the pick-up truck losing control and colliding with four additional vehicles parked along the median.  The pick-up truck, heavily damaged from the collisions, continued back across Rehoboth Avenue westbound striking the curb along the north shoulder of the roadway, a bike rack, and two more vehicles that were in motion at the intersection of Rehoboth Avenue and Second Street. The pick-up truck then struck a pole and came to rest on the sidewalk along the north side of Rehoboth Avenue west of Second Street.

As a result of the collision, five patients were transported to Beebe Health Campus for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.   The driver of the pick-up truck was one of the patients, as well as, a 16 year old juvenile.

No pedestrians were struck by any of the vehicles involved in the collision.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

Rehoboth Beach Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the collision or who has information about the collision to please contact Detective Tyler Whitman at (302) 524-1391 or submit a tip through Delaware Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-847-3333 or online at http://delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.  Anyone with information can also submit a tip online to the Rehoboth Beach Police Department via our webpage at https://www.cityofrehoboth.com/form/government/departments/police/submit-crime-tip.
