HARBESON WOMAN ASSAULTS REHOBOTH OFFICER

Kiona Cypress, 26, of Rehoboth Beach, Del. was charged with resisting arrest Monday (11/05/18) evening after she punched and fled from a Rehoboth Beach Police officer during an investigative stop. 

At around 6:00pm, Rehoboth Beach Police were call to the Royal Farms in the 400 block of Rehoboth Avenue for a report of a disorderly female outside the store throwing trashcans.  Officers arrived to find the store clerk locked inside the store.  They learned that prior to their arrival Cypress was seen fighting in the parking lot.  Before leaving the area in a vehicle, Cypress reportedly knocked over trashcans and newspaper stands outside the store spreading trash and debris around the exterior.

Officers were able to locate and conduct an investigative stop on the vehicle along Rehoboth Avenue Extended in the area of Henlopen Junction.  During the stop Cypress, a passenger in the vehicle, punched an officer in the chest and fled on foot into the Henlopen Junction complex.  Cypress ran a short distance before being apprehended by a pursuing officer.  As the officer was attempting to place her in handcuffs, Cypress kicked him multiple times damaging his uniform. Cypress was eventually handcuffed and arrested, but continued to fight and resist officers throughout the process of her arrest. 

No one was seriously injured during the incident. 

Cypress was arrested and charged with 1 count of offensive touching of a law enforcement officer, 1 count of resisting arrest, 1 count of criminal mischief, 1 count of disorderly conduct, and 1 count of failure to comply with taking of fingerprints and photographs.  Cypress was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $3,500.00 secured bail.
