Project Update

Construction for the Lake Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project, which started September 2016, completed May 2017. Kercher Engineering worked with the city and DelDOT to redesign Lake Avenue from Rehoboth Avenue to Third Street as part of a federally funded project. The project has resulted in a wide array of street improvements. The project provides safe, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant sidewalks along Lake Avenue and crosswalks at the intersection of Third Street. The project includes a minor realignment of the street, elimination of parking on one side, installation of 5-foot wide sidewalks for the full length of the street on both sides and improved street lighting. Additionally, utility poles have been relocated and the existing drainage system has been upgraded. The Lake Avenue project was funded with an $800,000 federal grant, administered by DelDOT. The remaining funds are being paid by the city.

Residents were enthused by the changes that resulted from the project and now their street has experienced a major face lift. Thanks to businesses who endured street construction for months, they are now reaping the benefits. The project produced a streetscape in a beautiful, inclusive way. The streetscape will greatly benefit the residents and businesses on Lake Avenue, in terms of curb appeal and space and safety.
