Lincoln Man Arrested for DUI After Pursuit

On Monday, June 29, 2015 at approximately 12:35 am a Rehoboth Beach Police Officer conducted a traffic stop silver Nissan Altima being operated by Joseph Whaley, 27 of Lincoln Delaware for a traffic violation in the area of Rehoboth Avenue and Second Street.    

A second officer arrived on scene and began conducting field sobriety tests on Whaley when he suddenly placed the vehicle in drive and sped off traveling west on Rehoboth Avenue.  The subject was apprehended in the area of Grove Street and Columbia Avenue just north of the Royal Farms.  It was determined that Whaley threw a small clear bag out the window prior to being apprehended. The bag, containing a white substance, was later tested and determined to be methamphetamines.  Whaley was taken to Beebe Health Care where a blood draw was completed to determine the substance or substances Whaley was consuming.  Whaley was charged with DUI, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Disregarding a Police Signal, Hindering Prosecution, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia,  Driving While Suspended, 2 Counts of Failure to Destroy Temporary Registration, Failure to Use Signal, Failure to Have Registration, Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device and Failure to Have Headlights on.

Joseph L. Whaley was committed to Sussex Correctional Institute in default of $63,800 secured bail. Whaley is scheduled to appear in the Sussex County Court of Common Pleas on July 2nd for a preliminary hearing.  Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Rehoboth Beach Police Department at (302) 227-2577.
