Recycling and Refuse Collection
Recycling
The City’s Recyclables Collection Program is now in its second year and remains free of charge including providing free containers. Recycling reduces the volume of trash interred at the landfill, saves the City tipping fees and is environmentally friendly.
Not signed up yet? Contact the City Manager’s office at information@cityofrehoboth.com or 302-227-4641 to sign up or to get more information. Remember, the residential program is FREE!
Collection is on Fridays. A 65-gallon wheeled cart is provided free for newspapers, magazines, phonebooks, narrow-neck plastic bottles, aluminum and steel cans, corrugated cardboard, junk mail and glass. The cart must be placed at the curb on designated Friday mornings before 8:00 a.m. for collection.
Beginning May 1, collection will be each Friday through September including on holidays. Beginning with the first Friday in October, collection will be the first, third and fifth Fridays through April, including on holidays except Christmas and New Year’s Days, at which time pickup is the following day.
Please remember there is a recycling station behind the fire company on Rehoboth Avenue which accepts old batteries, cardboard, newspapers, cans, plastic bottles and glass. The recycling station is open 24/7.
Refuse
For streets south of Rehoboth Avenue curb side collection takes place each Monday and Thursday. The north side is picked up each Tuesday and Friday. It is important to double bag food waste to deter birds and cats from opening and scattering the contents. Place curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection.
All refuse shall be kept and stored in such a manner that no obnoxious or otherwise offensive odor such as constitutes a nuisance is detectable on any adjacent street or property owned by someone other than the person owning the property where the refuse is kept or stored. This prohibition shall also include the container for storing refuse.
Citizens are reminded that the blue refuse barrels located along the avenues and boardwalk are for use by the general public for disposal of wastepaper, etc. and may not be used for disposal of household trash or rubbish.
From Memorial Day through Labor Day a dumpster is available to Rehoboth Beach residents for household trash only. The dumpster is located on Lincoln Street adjacent to the old wastewater treatment plant and is open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday only. Exit off Rehoboth Avenue at State Road. Go under the overpass, around the bend to Lincoln Street. Turn right on Lincoln and proceed to fenced-in area on the right. The large dumpster is on the right.
In late April the City offers to its residents an annual spring cleanup for discarded household items other than construction materials. Please contact the City Manager for further information at 227-6181. Please respect your neighbor and your city by following these suggestions.
Payments for residential refuse are due by August 31, without penalty. Payments for commercial refuse are due by July 31, without penalty.
